What I find is it's not unpredictable at all. When I do a "save as" in 
Version 10.5.3 of BBEdit on OS 10.7.5 it consistently defaults to the last 
folder to which a BBEdit file was saved. The previous version would, by 
default, save to the same folder as the original.

One method is not necessarily "better" than the other, just different. I 
was looking for a way to set a default to the old behavior because it's 
what I'm accustomed to in my work habits, but I haven't found one yet.
