16GB is ample.

The only other thing I can suggest which might cause this issue is a bad disc 
drive, that has happened to me in the past. Mac OS X threw up error message in 
the console so it was easy to track down.

Did you try the last beta that was posted in this forum, I have been using it 
and it is stable.
