I just got back from running errands, and I had shut down the

This does not correspond to my experience at all, so now I'm
curious what's happening. I'm hoping you'll post whatever the
outcome is after working with Barebones support.
I use the "Open from FTP Server" command frequently, sometimes
with several files open at once from multiple servers, editing
and saving as needed. Some files are larger than 3 MB
I'm not clear how one would "shut down the editor" - do you mean
Quit BBEdit? - and have the FTP component still running. That's
like having the Open File dialog still there after quitting the
program. Maybe the FTP dialog was asking you to confirm
something, and BBEdit didn't really quit when you thought it
had. If your connection with the server went down briefly,
BBEdit's FTP might be stuck trying to re-connect, or just trying
to tell you that it lost the connection.
As another angle, are you having BBEdit freeze with local files?
Finally, what text editor are you accustomed to using in your
previous machines? Members of this list might recognize a user
pattern that doesn't apply to BBEdit.
Good luck.
