Capsule summary:

In order to gain all the benefits of using a filesystem, one needs to have a filesystem available. :-)

Thus, if neither local caching solutions such as Transmit nor source control (i.e. keeping working copies both locally & on the remote machine) suffice for your needs, we recommend ExpanDrive <http://www.expandrive.com/>

[PS: Since SSH FUSE hasn't been reliable for quite some time in our experience, we no longer recommend it, though in general making any such service work right is a darned hard job. :-) ]

I've been looking for a good solution to open a remote *directory* over SSH. I'm well aware that you can open single files either through the built-in S/FTP browser or via the command line. But that's not enough. Opening multiple files gets to be a real pain.

The only viable solution I've found so far is to mount the remote directory as a volume using something like Transmit Disk. However, these solutions usually have weird caching issues and I don't really trust FUSE based solutions (they've had too many compatibility issues and kernel panic inducing bugs in the past for me to really be a fan). One solution would be to set up SMB sharing but I'd strongly prefer SSH, as setting up SMB plus the required VPN on every machine I need this for really isn't possible.

Does anyone have a good solution for this? I'm thinking of submitting this as a feature request.
