Yep, that's what `rbbedit` does (minus new file creation; I'll have to
add that), but just abstracts away many of the finer details so it's
easy to install and use on lots of servers.
I'm curious, how long have you been using your scripts? `rbbedit` is
still young compared to BBEdit, but it's far from being an infant:
