What I've done is switched off the icons for the filenames and reduced the 
width of the document list, and that's fairly close to what I wanted. I 
usually have about a 50-100 random files open at a time and need to see the 
document list when I'm switching between files. Actually, a nice feature 
might be an auto show-hide for the document list (as per the macOS dock 
control) whenever the cursor is near the left-edge of the screen? Not sure 
how viable that is or how seamlessly it could be integrated, it's just a 
thought.
