We're a generally happy Networker and Cambridge Computer customer with a
Qualstar AIT-2 library plugged into Solaris 8 box via a mini backup SAN.

A few days ago, a sysadmin here applied a large patch cluster including
108725 which overwrites st.conf without saving a copy. It was intended that
the mirrored drives would be split before applying such a large set of
patches but this was not done. So we have a big problem.

(I can justify this spam by calling it a WARNING: PATCH 108725 OVERWRITES
ST.CONF.)

To simplify things our intention is to use a loaner AIT-2 drive to restore
the entire system to half the disk mirror. We have successfully
written/read a fresh tape using tar (verified good data with sum), but
Networker fails to read any of our existing tapes.

Best guess here is st.conf. We and CamCom went through 4 different
iterations thereof during the installation of the library.

Google returns over a dozen different st.conf entries purporting to be
correct for AIT-2 drives. We've tried the one in the AIT manual (which
appears to assume AIT-1) and "1,0x34,0,0x1639,4,0x0,0x0,0x0,0x0,3;" but
neither work.

Does there happen to be a CamCom customer here who can tell us which of the
many possible entries they "usually" use?

(Of course we've asked them, but we're desperate/hurried enough to spam.)

Legato support has not pointed fingers back at Sun and our sysadmin
(probably correctly). We don't have a live Sun support contract (penny
wise, pound foolish).

The underlying problem we are trying to solve by rolling the entire
system back to pre-patch state is that boot -r refuses to build *anything*
in /dev/rmt. Legato's inquire utility finds the drives but no devices for
them. We attempted to make manual symlinks to the appropriate SCSI ids but
it hasn't worked. If anyone has tips for that, we'd accept that as an
answer too.
