This is resolved, sorry for the noise. Note: dd is handy for reverse-engineering block sizes. For the purposes of the st(7D) man page, 64K means 64K - 2. Do not use 0x4000 unless you want compatibility headaches later.
Incidentally, if you know a good Solaris sysadmin looking for a stable .edu job, we might have one for them. Mostly admin systems running Oracle 8i and Java app servers (peoplesoft 7&8), and the aforementioned backup server.
