Like I said you HAVE to do cost-benefit on the situation you have. What happens if the files are recovered, worst case. If the company will lose a few $1000's 'rm' is most likely your best bet. If the company will lose millions and will most likely go under, then destroying the disk isn't a bad idea. (and yes there exist sceneros like this.)
The original question that started this thread was how, on SGIs, do you destory a file/disk (it's unclear which they where asking) so that modern disk forensics can't recover them. Well that includes if you ask me someone with effectivly unlimited resources, trying to ruin your company. We have pointed out, that it's not easy to really erase magnetic data.
