I don't have a DDS-3 tape drive handy, but I do know that anyone
recovering the data would need to know the format in which it was
written.  If you don't know, it may still be possible to recover the
data, but it will take longer.

Some possibilities:

dump format
cpio
tar
proprietary backup software format
proprietary operating system format (HP has one, for instance)
