Previously, on "BaseSpace.net's adventures in the land of internet connectivity providers", I was notified in mid-May that FastNet was terminating service in Boston officially on June 1. This was 2 weeks notice so we were pretty upset. We scrambled to get some alternate connectivity and found TowerStream, a wireless internet provider who, since they don't go through Verizon for a local loop, was able to get me up and running in just a few days (I highly recommend their service, BTW). We talked to some network engineers who assured us that we had until the end of June before they would actually pull the plug, but apparently they were misinformed as they actually pulled the plug on June 9th.
Yesterday I received a nice pdf in email from FastNet saying that they are filing for chaper 11 bankruptcy. I noted with amusement that the article on Forbes.com about this said that FastNet provides internet service on the East Coast from Boston to Washington. So any advice on what this means for me? I am still using NetAXS (which was bought by FastNet about a year ago)'s IP space. What I would really love to see happen is for ARIN to reclaim the IP space and re-allocate it to FastNet's customers. Sadly I doubt ARIN is interested in being that proactive. This whole mess has cost me about $5K in installation fees, consulting fees, SLA credits, etc, and vastly more than that in time and lost income from my consulting practice. - Alex Aminoff BaseSpace.net --- Send mail for the `bblisa' mailing list to [EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
