Is it true that you need to do > something special to back up exchange? Are there cheaper ways of doing > this? Yes it is true. You need to do something special to backup Exchange. It's all large proprietary database files on the backend so you'll need something that plugs into Exchange directly to ensure accurate backups. Try looking at CA's BrightStor/ArcServe product. It's priced a lot more reasonably than Legato or BackupExec for this. Or at least it was when I last priced it. We've been using it here to backup our office for several months with only one minor hitch (CA's open file agent doesn't play nice with Intuit's QuickBooks software with a shared database installed on a Windows 2000 file server). > I've got Red Hat 8.0 and 64-bit Solaris 8 running, too, if there's a GNU > Linux/Unix product that I can use. If only... Unfortunately closed systems (usually) require non-free solutions and Exchange is about as closed as they come.
