This has been possible for a very long time. The Oroborus guys got a working X11 environment back in the 10.2 time frame. Apple has been offering an X11 package on the install discs since 10.4 (and no, you don't have to reinstall the whole OS just to add that package).

As of 10.5 X11 automatically comes pre-installed on OS X. I think you can go through the effort of deleting/not installing it if you really want to, but it's part of the default install now.

Full X11R7 compatibility is claimed.
