Thanks a lot!

In the meantime I wrote a small bash script that fixed the bit rate to 1M
(attached) and put it in /etc/sysconfig/network/if-up.d/ (I use OpenSUSE 10.2).
[The ping part is there because my bcm43xx doesn't come up immediately,
but only after several packets have been sent through it.]
