-256 dBm is when it doesn't report anything at all.

It's a custom event, wpa_supplicant ignores it. Just for softmac
debugging/looking what it does. It is sent out when a positive
authentication response is received from the access point.

Yeah, your AP is not letting you authenticate. I don't remember what it
means, check the 802.11 specs of some header file.

If you get 'associated!' in the log file then at the same time in
iwevent you should get a "new ap" event (or such). This is what
wpa_supplicant actually uses.
