It is pretty stupid of Ubuntu to move the firmware into this kind of folder. Do 
they expect the 
firmware to change the same as modules? If openSUSE did this, I would have to 
be unpacking or 
copying my firmware several times a day. I have already run 3 new kernels today.

They also have not done us any favors by turning off the debug messages from 
bcm43xx.

If I followed your renaming, it certainly looks as if the firmware is being 
properly loaded. The 
debug messages would have told us for sure. The next step is to run the four 
commands 'ifconfig eth1 
up', 'iwconfig', 'ifconfig', and 'iwlist scan' and send us the output that they 
produce.

Does your laptop have a wireless on/off switch or button? Is it on, and is the 
wireless enabled 
light on?
