You should get the 2.6.23 kernel from wireless-dev. It will have the b43 driver

The driver always turns the radio off during initialization and turns it on 
during the ifup step.
This is normal.

No, a rev 9 802.11 core uses b43. Only chips with a rev < 5 use b43legacy.

When you change to b43, you will need to use b43-fwcutter. The firmware files 
have different names
and occur in different directories than for bcm43xx varieties.
