To help your community benefit from the ICT revolution sweeping across the globe, you would like to enable computers to communicate in hypolan. Knowing the Open Source Software, you opt to base your work on Linux and associated software suite. Where does one start? What are the steps involved? What resources do you need? What are the requirements on these resources? What tools and information outlets are available to help you with the various parts of this task? Identifying the right forum for a given problem is a non-trivial challenge. This how-to guide is for YOU. The FOSS Guide to Localization covers all the steps involved in the localization process starting from fundamental topics such as Locale, Character Encoding and Fonts Creation to advanced topics including Input Methods, Gettext Framework and Translation Guidelines. The guide takes some FOSS applications such as KDE, GNOME, OpenOffice and Mozilla(Firefox) as case-studies. There is also a list of tools for the various tasks in localisation. This guide is a production of the International Open Source Network (IOSN) an initiative of UNDP's Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP), in collaboration with the Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Mumbai, India and supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.
