try with

#chmod 777 /dev/rtc

if it fail then ./configure mplayer with disable rtc
support

or

ya sometime if u use custom kernel, then some package
from linuxpackages.net do not work.

(slackware is best distro for compile other optional
software from source, always try to instal unofficial
software from source)

better download it from

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

when i was a slackware user then i do all manually,
many of this command r optional (mplayer found these
itself) (these command can be change in the latest
version so read about it. it is just a sample from
me.)

(read about --enable-runtime-cpudetection!!! this
thing is very important for mplayer)

===================================================
./configure --enable-gui --enable-mencoder
--enable-largefiles --enable-ftp --enable-png
--enable-jpeg --enable-win32 --enable-dshow
--enable-real --enable-xvid --enable-divx4linux
--enable-libavcodec --enable-vorbis --enable-mp3lib
--enable-libmpeg2 --enable-vidix --enable-gl
--enable-vesa --enable-mga --enable-xv --enable-xmga
--enable-x11 --enable-directfb --enable-alsa
--enable-ossaudio --enable-arts --enable-esd
--enable-runtime-cpudetection --enable-i18n
--with-win32libdir=/usr/local/lib/codecs
--with-xvidlibdir=/usr/local/lib/libxvidcore.a
--with-xvidincdir=/usr/local/include/
--with-codecsdir=/usr/local/lib/
================================================

download and install these before compile mplayer.

win32 from mplayerhq.hu
(copy all win32's dll in /usr/local/lib/win32 or
/usr/lib/win32) to player wma and wmv in mplayer and
xine.

lame.sf.net
www.divx.com (linux version of divx codecs)
xvid.org
http://sourceforge.net/projects/faac (mp4)
linux.real.com

http://xiph.org/ (chk ? u need)

for better dvd support install libdvdcss
=========================================

http://freshmeat.net/projects/libdvdcss/

"libdvdcss is a simple library designed for accessing
DVDs like a block device without having to bother
about the decryption.
About:
libdvdcss is a cross-platform library for transparent
DVD device access with on-the-fly CSS decryption. It
currently runs under Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
BSD/OS, Solaris, BeOS, Win95/Win98, Win2k/WinXP, MacOS
X, HP-UX, QNX, and OS/2. It is used by libdvdread and
most DVD players such as VLC because of its
portability and because, unlike similar libraries, it
does not require your DVD drive to be region locked."
