Umm.. a bit confused here. vmware site provides free trial (workstation) but the product is not free (of cost)?!!!? I doubt the legality of any other source providing it for free. I will be very much interested to get VMware workstation for free. Also not sure what you mean by "workstations cannot host operating systems.". VMWare workstation that sits on top of a host OS can host a number of guest OS.
