Wayne,Sharon:
While i have not done it yet,(too many racoons) i understand that Hugh Lovel
finds an extraordinary symbiosis in growing weed-suppressive, nitrogen
fixing, cornfeeding soybeans thickly understory to his 3-row bean-feeding
corn beds, and clover/grasses in the permanent paths.
This setup initially means more (and unfamiliar) work to your friend, but as
Hugh might put it, "your" soil will not be "mined", and will create and
retain more organic components/vitality than if you took the conventional
route with its attendant erosions.
.....makes sense to me.
Is the baler for the harvest of your grasses too?
I too have inherited some well-intentioned sharing... particularly in
cultivation while the soil is too moist. One has to live with consequences
like that for years.
I reckon that a friendship which can accomodate the scrutiny of appropriate
tillage/timing is one worth cultivating. Maybe it would help to keep a
record of deeds for retroactive speculation against recorded local
conditions and the cycles of the planetary calendar.
.....kind of a "single-blind" test.
