Thanks, Christy, for your thoughtful response (sorry, I've been offline for 
a couple of days).  However, "Up to a point, Lord Copper", surely?  
Obviously I don't preach eradicating snakes, poison ivy etc from the face of 
the Earth - but might you not try to discourage them from your back yard?  
Do you contend that we shouldn't have 'eradicated' smallpox and other 
serious infections?
On the positive side, we've 'improved' practically all major crop plants by 
conventional breeding methods (and the reason why I wondered whether the 
modified soy might be acceptable was that the manipulated genes were soy 
ones, not foreign implants) - you don't surely want to grow small, bitter 
yellow berries rather than the tomatoes we're familiar with?
But then, I'm an argumentative old cuss anyway!  Tony N-S
