I too have been recommending "Bowling for Columbine" but to no avail, alas, all my true friends have already seen it and loved it, and the others, well, they wouldn't get it anyway. There is NO middle ground with Michael Moore! We love him, they hate him.
This movie does a pretty good job of batting away the usual dogma people trot out in search of the etiology of our little gun problem here in the US (or as Chris Rock points out in the movie, what is really a "bullet" problem!). I just can't applaud loud enough for any community spokesperson brave enough to BASH the crap out of the US television and news media whores like MM does. Did you ever wonder why so many people are afraid of the big black boogieman? Did you ever see such a thick smokescreen of non-news obscuring the real stories? They sell FEAR AND CONFUSION. I have been a huge fan of Michael Moore since he did the movie "Roger and Me" which was a quasi-documentary on the demise of his hometown Flint, MI due to the cessation of production and jobs from the nearby General Motors, the largest corporation in the world and perhaps the most myopic. All he wanted was a measly little ol' interview with Roger, the chairman of GM. WARNING to CEOs: never, ever, ever, let MM into your office! Har har har. Now MM has been touring the country promoting his pre-9/11 book 'STUPID WHITE MEN" and is now extending the conversation to the ongoing debacle with our esteemed administration and their latest blood-for-oil lust. As I said, stupid white men. If you get a chance to hear him on MPR or other radio, be sure to take notes. It is an amazing indictment of the evildoing nincompoops in office. The book is highly entertaining, depressing, eye-opening, maddening and enlightening. Like all of MM's work, the book is spotty, there are savage laser-sharp wit bombs but it is liberally studded with true duds. Still one of the best hardball attacks anyone has accomplished in recent memory. If you are new to his work, be prepared: he is sloppy and ham-fisted, he comes in sideways and can be irritating as hell. He doesn't play fair with the enemy and he doesn't ever give up in pursuit of the bad guys. You are so right about getting MM to poke around, overturn some turds and find out why President Bunnypants and Tony Blair are so hell-bent to destroy agriculture in our countries. On the other hand, MM will be gainfully employed for years spinning out sequels to his previous work, and I hope he does. SO, why don't we do it? MM does NOTHING that we can't do. Nothing. We have firebrands like Charles Waters, Michael Fox, Mark Purdy, Sally Fallon, Jerry Brunetti, Hugh Lovel, you, and so many others. LET'S JUST DO IT! I for one am tired of sitting on my hands waiting for the swells in office to "get it". Plus, we are preachin' to the choir here. Amen WGW
