Lloyd, Merla et al, I just attended a lecture by Gary Zimmer at ACRES that was an hour-long version of Lloyd's post. I'd like to chime in on the dangers of dolomitic lime and the problem of too much magnesium. Our local limestone (and possibly soil base) is high in magnesium. As a result our soils are tight, producing lots of foxtail every year. We are working away on this problem.
The obvious danger of using the wrong kind of lime (or calcium) for your soil type is making your problem worse. I also understand that using gypsum on the wrong soil can make things worse by causing the N to leach. Zimmer related that potato growers in Wisconsin started using liquid calcium nitrate a few years ago, dramatically reducing disease and increasing storeability of the crop. (Calcium Nitrate is not organic tho according to US stds. ) Dorothy __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
