The white paper contained in this link tells you how to connect to MSDE and view it via EM. Once you get this going, you can backup the database from SQL Server and restore it on the MSDE instance. An an example, try connecting to the MSDE database that comes with .NET. It would be yourMachineName\NetSDK. You can use integrated authentication to connect to it and display its contents in EM. Then backup the pubs database from your SQL Server and restore it on this new instance.
