Hey Mathew, 
A really cool idea. I think i know how this can be done. Remember reading this up 
somewhere on the net a few days back. You have to do client side scripting, XML/XSLT ! 
If i am correct, you are using server side XSLT without frames. That is why the data 
refreshes as soon as you click a link on the client, and then both the page reloads .. 
if you render the tree with client side XSL then it should work peacefully without 
hassles.. Try to read more on that. 
I am not sure whether you can do this using TreeView control of Microsoft Internet 
controls. You can use XML/XSL instead ! Does a better job too for stuff like this.. 
Also try to readup some material on XML Data islands and client side XSL 
transformation.
