The GAC is not a file! It is a folder 
structure. You could browse it best through the command prompt and see the 
different folders. When viewed through Windows Explorer, it masks the actual 
folder structure and shows you a more "user-friendly" view.
 
The gacutil tool allows you to view the 
cached files (files which are ngen-ed). On the command line say:
gacutil /l *.*
