They are a set of .net building blocks (more 
like reusable components), that encapsulate Microsoft recommendations of best 
practices for performing common tasks.
There are several application blocks that 
are designed and distributed by Microsoft including Exception Management Block, 
Data Access Block, Caching Block, Updater Block, Async Invocation Block and the 
like. All the blocks are distributed with source code and are implementation of 
some Patterns & Practices recommendation.
