Just Imagine you have to retrieve the customer information and based on that update 
the status of customer. The application would first retrive the customer id , then 
fetch the records from Database for this customer id . If the info is spreaded out in 
different tables in database u make joins or u end up calling each table in separate 
SQL. The overheads of calling each statement are opening the connection send the 
statement , parse / comile it wait for the results and close the connection.    
Compare this whole scenario with Stored proc implementation. You just pass the 
customer ID and status  to sp. things are done in one step at application level. At sp 
level all is done in one shot ( the different sql statement will be executed in one go 
and not separate chunks) , reducing the network traffic, enhancing performance , 
incresing maitenance ease.
