You should ideally be using the IMAGE data type of SQL Server. Storing Word documents 
as TEXT (or NTEXT) can sometimes corrupt formatting information. The IMAGE data type 
stores it as binary. Once you have an IMAGE column, you can read from that column and 
create back the Word document which can then be streamed to the client (if you are 
using a web application). The user can then upload the document back to the database 
and you can again store it back in binary.   Here some links for the same:
