I have a setup using Wake On Lan on my desktop and my router running DD-WRT.
I set up a cron job on the router that sends the 'magic packet' to the
desktop in the morning, then the machine shuts itself off at night. Or I
can wake it up by hitting a port that is forwarded with a magic packet.

When I was hosting my little site at home I had it set up so any traffic to
port 80 would wake the machine and then it would shut off after a few
minutes of inactivity. Gotta save those mW-h's.
