No, he said (and he's well-versed in the topic) that the CPU itself could be damaged by a power-down. I've always considered a read-only filesystem a prerequisite for household widgets which are on less-than-perfect power supplies; what I didn't realise until now was that with the BeagleBone that's not enough. The answer is some sort of battery cape, preferably one with a battery-backed RTC as well, since that's the other missing BBB peripheral. Does anyone know of such a cape?
