@Jens - thanks for the tip.

I tried it: setting usb0 dr_mode = peripheral and usb1 dr_mode = host.  I 
don't use usb0 at all; usb1 has a usb hub with wifi plugs.  The BBB ran for 
about a three hours under heavy load (125K packet captures w/ about 10K 
dropped) and then silently reset.  I'm going to try (1) soaking the BBB 
with a light load overnight, 2) run power over usb0.
