I thought it would be more useful to start a new thread about this. On another thread (here: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/beagleboard/G2l4uzUMnzk/aGV6jsJJAwAJ) :

The reason I was preparing the Debian uSD card image that led the the questions in my post last night was all the trouble I've been experiencing while trying to use my Logitech C615 webcam with the BBB running your ubuntu-14.04.3-console-armhf-2016-01-14 image. This camera works perfectly with any of my Linux PCs and with the Raspberry PI 2. But on the BBB, half the time I find errors in dmesg like "link is not ready" or "systemd-udevd[357]: timeout 'v4l_id /dev/video0'" resulting in "Failed to open /dev/video0: Permission denied". I thought I would try another image on the probably silly hope that I'd have more luck with Debian. Making matters even worse, frequently the result of "sudo reboot" is not reboot, but simply halt -- that seems to be correlated with the times that the usb webcam fails. This obviously makes it impossible to work on it remotely. If I'm not there to unplug and replug the power I'm out of luck. I got the BBB (and the Ras Pi) primarily to play around with some vision (using OpenCV and v4l2) and robotics ideas. So far everything I try leads me down multibranching sidetracks which are interesting but counterproductive. I do want to learn more about embedded systems in general, but that wasn't my immediate goal.
