What was the issue with your DTS file?
I'v the same problem. Same as you I reworked the DTS file. It was 
BB-I2C1-00A0.dts in my case.
I'v been trying to loading my i2c-device  at boot, but "
bone_capemgr.enable_partno=MY-I2C1" in "/boot/uEnv.txt" doesn't work. Although 
it works perfectly when I echo to cape slot.
I'v no idea, what is wrong.
