Ah, got it!

In /etc/resolv.conf, I had :
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 1.2.3.4

I took out the loopback nameserver and put in another real nameserver, and 
it is now working!
Funny, that didn't cause a problem with ssh or ping, but apt-get apparently 
only tried the loopback DNS.
