So you have a PC with Ubuntu? Which version? Are you running Ubuntu as a native operating system or from a virtual machine? Connect the BBB using USB, dump logs (e.g. using "tail -n 100 /var/log/syslog") and post here for further analysis. In the mean time - as a quick workaround I would connect the BBB to your local LAN using Ethernet. Then you'd find it from your PC using the name beaglebone.local. E.g.
