fyi,
  You might want to do a:

  ruby -v
  gem -v

Sounds like you have two different ruby/gem installations. I've seen 
this a lot when upgrading to gems 1.3 -- by chance are you using debian 
or a derivative like ubuntu? they have been notorious for the past year 
or so of really screwing up their packages w/ruby

to fix in the future you can either
  a) rm -rf the older gem installation
  b) symlink it to your new one
  c) set your path to the correct ruby installation
