Can beets keep duplicates of tracks in multiple formats?

I've searched this mailing list, and the repo, for related posts, but they
haven't been updated in a while, so I wanted to check if there had been any
further developments.

I'd like to be able to keep multiple formats if possible. For example, I'm
planning to host all my music on a remote server at some point, but only in
mp3 format (to save on space). So I would keep both flacs and mp3s at home
on my hard drive, but sync only the mp3s to my remote server to save on
storage space (with ampache or subsonic in front).

Could I use the 'convert' plugin to help with this? I notice this plugin
wants to put my converted files (or the originals) into a completely
separated directory, but it kinda makes more sense to me to have both
formats side by side in the same album directory.

As such, I have my paths config set like this:

```
paths:
  default: $albumartist/$album%aunique{}/$format/$track $title
```

I suppose if there's really no way to have both sets of files in the same
album directory, then I could have them as two separate trees... but then,
would I be able to still use beets to update metadata on both trees? It
seems only one file (the original or the conversion) stays in the beets
collection. I'd like beets to manage both, if possible...
