That `pip install -e .` technique is the way to enable “editable” installations. I don’t, however, see why the two techniques would lead to different values for sys.platform… in fact, just running `print(sys.platform)` in the plain Python interpreter yielded a blank string! So it seems like there’s a larger problem at foot.
