I think Solaris 8 & higher, the limit is something like 4 or 8 terabytes.
For all intents and purposes, it's unlimited.

It's possible that x86 can go past 2GB, now that I think about it. The
Linux 2.4 kernel, also 32-bit, can handle files larger than 2GB now. Perl
may need to have this support built into it explicitly, as you say.
