Hi!

So, I'm wondering where one might find a place to use whatever small
amount of programming they have and be expected to learn enough to be
a real asset over the course of a yr or two.
A place where one would be expected to produce programs regularly.

This doesn't actually have to be a paying job...

Would you be interested in helping out in the Maplat Web Framework?

While the project is - in theory - commercially backed (my boss gives me a few hours a week payed time to develop the open source framework further, because we have some in-house applications based on it), i can't offer any cash - i can only offer you participation in the project as well as my time to guide you through.

As well as working on different modules for webmasks, theres also a lot of open (undocumented...) Todo's for writing standalone tests, demos, background workers and so forth. Of course, if you come up with a usefull feature on your own, it will end up in the next release.

At the start, you wont need high Perl skills or anything, having basic knowledge will be enough. Maplat also uses SQL (Postgresql) as a data store; no prior knowledge required, i can walk you through your first steps. As for the version control system, we use Mercurial (also quite simple).

You would be expected to add functionality specified by me, think on your feet when a problem arises, as well as come up with "look at that cool feature i just implemented"-moments ;-)

LG
Rene
