You might have more luck asking this in the Perl CGI Beginners list. I haven't got any scripts that do this, but I know it's possible.

Then when the field loses focus you can validate it. This means the form doesn't have to be submitted before the user is alerted of a problem. For extra robustness you can also validate the submitted results in the perl script and return the user to the form with highlights on what is wrong/missing.
