Actually not quite.

    ($org) = ($1 =~ s/,//g);

is assigning the result of the =~ operator to $org. This is the number of
times the regex matched in the object string: in this case '1', because
there is one comma.

To abbreviate

    $1 =~ s/,//g;
    $org = $1;

you would have to write:

    $org = ($1 =~ s/,//g, $1);

but then this isn't what was wanted anyway :-}
