I would count myself among those non-college graduates who have managed to secure "degree required" jobs (don't worry, I'm not a programmer, it just helps me with my work). I don't think it has hurt me in the way of skills or cognitive abilities, but I had to learn on my own those things that I would probably have taken in a lot quicker in a more structured environment. It was the hard way to go, and part of me will always wish I'd gone that route.
