PDF is not a set of images. It is precisely typeset text (optionally with images embedded). That being said, I'm not sure of how you could convert a pdf to bmp or if it can be done with perl. However, I think that I've heard you can do those sort of things with ghostscript (if you're using GNU/Linux or similar).
