It's probably not related, but I had an issue with this just last week.
I haven't gone back to check if the error messages are similar, but the
time on one of our domain controllers was off by about 12-13 minute.
The VMware host was controlling the time so it was incorrect. Once the
time was reset on the DC I could log in to BAS.

David, what happens if you try to run *this* LDAP query manually, say
using ldp?

Subject: [Bes-admins] Cannot login to BAS

I am having issues logging into BAS, either on my account, our our BES
service account. Originally I was getting a pre-authentication error,
and I saw references online to invalid characters. Our service account
password had a pipe symbol, so I changed it (though it worked before.)
It was changed in the AD tab in config, and all services. I had it on
5.0 SP2, and sometimes would have issues, but then would get in. Moved
to SP2MR1, and cannot get in at all.

Now I don't get that, but get this:

(09/26 20:25:43:318):{http-servername.domain.com%2F172.xx.xx.xx-443-5}
[com.rim.bes.basplugin.activedirectory.LDAPSearch] [INFO] [ADAU-1001]
{u=SystemUser, t=3609} performPagedLDAPSearch problem performing LDAP
operation: url=ldap://adsserver.domain.com:3268 base=
filter=(&(objectClass=user)(objectCategory=person)(|(sAMAccountName=dpet
erso)(userPrincipalName=dpeterso))) scope=2

IP addresses and server names redacted.
