FWIW, I stopped tethering altogether, and the company now pays for a Verizon 4G 
LTE USB device.  Holy eff is it fast.  Its faster than my home cable modem.

Bluetooth 1.1 caps out around 700kb, I regularly see 1.5mbs+ on my 3G 
connection, so I gave up on the BT and just use USB. But I’ve jumped ship and 
use Android Wifi Tether J

Oddly enough, when using the tether.com app, I got nearly identical speeds 
using 
Bluetooth or USB, but Steve has a good point about keeping the BB charged.

Wait, are you a BES Admin using an iPhone?!  =)
 
Also, you'll get much better results tethering using a USB cable than you will 
via Bluetooth... Plus you charge the BB instead of draining it this way
