Well i seemed to be ok, each change to folders was reflected on the
next time of j8s start....BUT when i tried to reproduce the error by
removing j8 from the system and doing a new unpacking and
reinstalling, no pathname seems to work in folders.cfg, i tried
d:/l/j, d:/l/j/ and d:l/j (ie user d:/l/j...). Each with a restart (to
no effect) and a

install 'qtide'

also to no effect. so my system is now broken with j8s user deep
inside Microsoftee territory - far different from my regular j
environment.

In case there is some confusion - config file changes apply when J is
reloaded. All the Edit|Configure menu does is make it easy to edit the
config files from the session.

There are bugs in the beta, so you may have hit one. However, changing
the Folders config works fine for me.

To narrow this down, load J, change the Folders config and save it,
then look at the folders.cfg file from explorer. It should have been
updated.

Again, there is no requirement to reinstall after changing a configuration file.

Hmm then why was it necessary for me to do a

install 'qtide'

After making changes to the folder paths using the
Edit/Configure/Folders facility? Maybe there is a shortcut but
rebooting J did not work.

Sorry, I don't understand the question. There is no reinstall
requirement for config changes.

How extensive is the reinstall requirement for config changes? Will it
persist after j8 gets out of Beta?

In w7 i ran

install 'qtide'

after doing a change to Edit/Configure/Folders and J seemed to accept
the change.

Is there any shortcut or must one do an install? Is that true for all
aspects of Edit/Configure?
