Perhaps I should just stay away from j801 until things settle
down, but I keep trying things and my confusion deepens.
I have two folders for 801: j801 and j64-801 (as well as the
j64-801-user folder). I just updated the j801 files and tried
starting j801/bin/jqt, but got the same result as when I last
tried (this is on a Mac, OS 10.6.8):
[uni:~/j801/bin] jph% jqt
dyld: Library not loaded:
@executable_path/../Qt/Frameworks/QtGui.framework/Versions/4/QtGui
Referenced from: /Users/jph/j801/bin/.//jqt
Reason: no suitable image found. Did find:
/Library/Frameworks/QtGui.framework/Versions/4/QtGui: mach-o, but
wrong architecture
Trace/BPT trap
On the other hand, the j64-801 jqt does run. Sort of. I get the nice
qt window and can run my programs in it. Plot works, but does so by
calling Acrobat to display a pdf file. Viewmat loads, does not give
an error, but opens no display. Run|Launch Pad|qtdemo gives a menu
of 22 items, many of which seem to work, but some fail as others have
noted; e.g. gl2 throws a popup with "error in: demo_gs_paint" and when
I click "OK" to clear it I just get another popup. I have to go to
"force quit" to escape. Finally, Help|Studio|Labs just gives a popup
with "!", but at least it can be cleared. I do have the labs installed
in the addons/labs folder but I don't know how to invoke them.
I've had no luck getting j801 to run on my Windows 7 machine, as it
can't seem to find the right Qt binaries. I care less about that,
since I only run J under windows for one thing: the old 32-bit j602
is the *only* version/operating system that still runs the programs
in Cliff Reiter's "Fractals ..." book.
All this is frustrating for those of us who just want to run a bit of
code and plot a few things. *But I'm not really complaining*. Both
j601 & j701 are fine. I am grateful for the joy that using J brings
me every day. Thanks, Roger, for posting the links to the Perlis essays
with his sentiments about the "lyrical" nature of APL. Regrettably, J
- and to some extent APL - have never attained the "critical mass" of
users that could free the developers from the struggle to maintain a
cross-platform implementation. I do find it mysterious that the vast
majority of those in the "pure sciences" remain blind to the beauty of J.
